The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. (1 Timothy 1:15)
God sent his Son, his divine, eternal Son, to bear the punishment we deserve.
This is the heart of everything.
This is the best news in the world.
There’s no way we can save ourselves from our sin and from His wrath. Remember, the “wage” we earn for our sinful life is eternal death.
Salvation is about the free gift. It is exactly and completely that, free for us. However, it was incomparably costly for God.
God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh. (Romans 8:3)
God condemned sin; he punished sin. The death of Jesus, his Son, is our punishment.
The Bible puts it like this:
2 Corinthians 5:21
He [God the Father] made Him [Christ the Son] who knew no sin [he lived a perfect life] to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
That is what that most famous Bible verse, John 3:16 is talking about when it says,
For God so loved the world (sinners like you and I) that He gave His only Son . . .
Jesus died by crucifixion. The pain, shame, disgrace and worst of all the wrath of God was all experienced there by Jesus. This is the terrible punishment for your rebellion and sin against Holy God. Jesus bore that punishment.
That is why it is possible for the Lord to say to us, “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” (Romans 8:1).
This is not just good news, this is the best news.
- no more guilt
- no more punishment
- no more wrath
- no more condemnation
Eternal life, peace with God forever.
This is “The free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
